For $50 per month, you can support one resident (age 13-28) who is receiving shelter, spiritual training, skill training, counseling and Christian love. "We Love Peru" Celebration & Dinner - May 1

PERU CELEBRATION SET FOR MAY 1

Project Restoration will host a "We Love Peru" Celebration and Dinner on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. This event will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Lake Gaston Christian Life Centre in Ebony, Virginia (1411 Robinson Ferry Road, one mile east of the Ebony Fire Department).

The celebration will focus on the wonderful support from area churches, businesses, individuals and groups (including Saint Paul's College SIFE Team and the Southside Combined Choir) that led to the completion of a new home for the Nancy Cole Women's Home in Lima, Peru. You will see pictures of the ministry at the home to the desperate women and teen girls of Peru. Various groups will present updates of the current status of this ministry and plans for the future, including a Mission's Trip from this area to Peru in August and exciting new training programs at the home.

There is no admission to this event. Each family is asked to bring one main covered dish and one side dish/dessert. We will provide authentic Peruvian food for you to sample.

Transition News from Nancy Cole Women's Home

The Nancy Cole Women's Home in Lima, Peru is alive and well. Pastor Lilliam, who has been on a leave of absence due to health reasons, is resuming the directorship of the home on Tuesday, October 26, 2010.

We thank the transition team, headed by Dr. Nancy Tolentine and provided by Camino de Vida, for their work during the transition time. We toured the facility today, met with the residents, and talked with them concerning the future plans for this ministry.

The home will now be under the covering of Project Restoration. The final meeting of the Camino de Vida Board will be held on October 26. Camino de Vida will no longer provide any oversight or support for the home. A new Board of Directors will be appointed this week and the governing policies, including the new Document of Goverance and mission statement, will be developed. All assets of the home, including building and contents, will be trasferred to Project Restoration and will be handled by the new Board of Directors. New intake procedures will be developed and implemented. The goal is to raise the number of residents to 20-25 by Christmas.

One of the significant challenges will be raising an adequate budget to operate the home. Your prayers and support are needed so that the number of residents can be quickly increased. There are many girls and women who need this intervention.

Several major maintenance issues will need to be addressed, including hot water access, painting, carpet replacement in the rec room, and ceiling tile replacement projects. An itemized list will be posted. If you can bring a team to work at the home, or if you can provide funds to assist with these projects, we will help you facilitate that process.

We encourage you to organize a ministry team that could spend several days or a week at the home. This allows your team to develop a spiritual bond with the girls and indicates your love for them, which expresses the love of Christ toward them. We can suggest various ways that you could help this ministry, especially during the reorganization. You can use your own creativity and the strengths of your team members to design practical, helpful and uplifting activities. Interpreters can be secured to assist with communication. Changes at the Nancy Cole Women's Home

Many changes are taking place at the Nancy Cole Women's Home. We will post new developments as they occur and will be moving to a new web site in the near future. Your prayers and support are needed at this critical time in the ministry of the home. The home will no longer be affiliated with the Camino de Vida Church but will come under the covering of Project Restoration. Pastor Lilliam, who has been on a leave of absence due to medical reasons, is back as the director of the ministry. Many decisions concerning the reorganization will be made during the week of October 24-31, 2010. As new plans are announced, including the appointment of a new Board of Directors, they will be posted.

New Education Program in Place at Home

We are excited to announce that the residents of the Nancy Cole Women's Home now have access to educational classes that will allow them to complete their secondary school grades. Three teachers come to home three days each week to teach Communication and Language, Math, and Civics. The teachers are provided free from an existing boarding school in Lima. The home has to provide school supplies, copying services and transportation. PTL!

We have just received a donation of funds to purchase a xerox machine and computers for the Library/Lab to enhance the schooling. What a difference this will make in the lives of the teen girls. At present, 29 girls are enrolled in the classes. Diagnostic testing has been completed to determine the reading and math levels of each student.

Funds have been pledged to hire a dewing instructor for the Sewing Lab. This will allow the new machines to be used in a systemic manner to give the residents life skills for the future. They can also make items to sell for the home. Also, funds have been provided to increase security at the home.

The greatest need at the present time is to provide more monthly support for regular operations. We need more sponsors for the "Adopt a Bed" Project ($50 per month) and more one-time donations for operations. As you plan your budget for 2009, consider a monthly contribution to assist the wonderful ministry at the Nancy Cole Women's Home. Encourage your church to place the home in the monthly mission's budget. We will be glad to provide promotional materials for you and your church.

Graduates from Nancy Cole Women's Home Recognized

At a recent service with residents and family members, Project Restoration and the Nancy Cole Women's Home recognized graduates from the restoration program offered at the home. A diploma has been designed and each graduate was presented with their own certificate. A copy of each certificate will be framed and displayed at the home as an incentive for residents to complete the program.

The entire rehabilitation program is designed to last for three years. However, due to the large number of teenagers in the current program, those guidelines are being reviewed. The program includes spiritual training, psychological training, teaching on addictive behavior, group and individual counseling, topical Bible studies, recreation, literacy and career training, family living and health training, and exposure to positive role models.

When a person leaves the program, an evaluation is made to determine if their goals have been met. If the answer is "yes," the person is listed as a graduate of the program. If a resident leaves without completing their goals, they are encouraged to return to the program at a future date to complete the process. The challenges that are faced by the residents often lead to a high turn-over rate. However, the workers encourage the residents to stay until their goals are met.

Graduates will be recognized each August and February with a special ceremony for families and visiting mission's teams. The graduates recognized at the recent ceremony, including some of the graduates from the past six years, are:

New Projects Completed

During the recent missions trip and thanks to your continued support and generosity, several new projects were completed at the home:

Many small maintenance projects were completed including installing six new light fixtures, repairing others, upgrading locks, hanging motivational pictures, repairing the PA system, installing a wireless router, installing a new web cam for video phone calls, purchasing a ladder, and upgrading the supply of tools at the home. Population at Home Reaches 42

The number of residents at the Nancy Cole Women's Home is at an all-time high - 42. Four new residents were added last week. In addition, one resident has just given birth to a baby and two more babies are expected within the next few months. God is working but the challenges are great. The need for additional monthly support expands each day, with rising prices and rising needs.

Sewing Lab Installed and Dedicated

Due to the support of Vessels of Mercy International of Richmond, Virginia, the sewing machine lab has been installed and the initial training has been completed. The girls are very excited about the program, which will have three primary goals: giving the girls a marketable skill, allowing the girls to make some of their own clothes and other materials for the home (i.e. towels), and encouraging the girls to make items that could be sold to benefit the home. This is Phase 1 of a three-phase project. The next phase will add machines to make jeans.

The Dora Overby Sewing Lab is housed in the Dorcas Sewing Room on the 4th floor and currently contains four industrial sewing machines, one home sewing machine, five rolling adjustable chairs, and a lockable storage cabinet. Marc and Wade, from the LGCLC Missions team, repaired the door and installed a heavier lock for security purposes. The lab is also protected by a security alarm system.

Dora Overby is the grandmother of Bev Gibson, the Director of Vessels of Mercy and a strong supporter of the ministry at the home. Dora is 84, has been a seamstress all her life and has experienced some of the same early-life struggles as the girls at the home. She was instrumental in helping Vessels to establish the lab and, since she cannot sew because of health issues, she is donating all of her sewing materials to the home. A plaque, indicating her role in this project, will be added to the sewing lab at a later date.

If you or your group wish to assist with this project, here are the current needs:

1. Even though the owners of the company have promised to provide on-going training, we would like to hire a sewing teacher to come three days a week to direct the program for maximum efficiency and return from the investment. We have already located a person who is willing and anxious to handle this task. This teacher would be able to work closely with 15-20 girls (in four separate sessions) to learn the specifics of the sewing trade. This will cost app. $150 per month.
2. The next machine that needs to be purchased, which will allow the girls to make jeans, costs $4,000.
3. Donations for material and threads are always needed in any amount.

Three Teams Unite to Minister at Home

What a great week at the Nancy Cole Women's Home as three missions teams from the United States combined their efforts to bring teaching, recreation, recognition, resources, and love to the residents of the Nancy Cole Women's Home. Workers from Lake Gaston Christian Life Centre of Ebony, Virginia; Christ Worship Center of Woodbridge, Virginia; and Mariners Church of Irvin, California ministered together by presenting drama skits, dance, music, testimonies, speaking, maintenance projects, cleaning projects, bringing gifts, bringing resources, serving food, sharing individually, serving through Spa Day activities, etc. Here are a few scenes from these visits:

The drama team from Christ Worship Center shared several funny and challenging human videos:

Paulette Newman-Jones and Sheryl Baird from LGCLC presented a beautiful hand-quilted wall hanging of the history of the Bible. These scenes were used throughout the week as the residents of the home presented dramas of selected scenes (quite creative and even funny). The quilted pictorial now hangs in the chapel.

The "Daughters of the King" Banquet, presented by LGCLC and Mariners Church, is a special time of service and love shown to the girls.

The kitchen servers enjoy a brief break before serving again!

Team members from LGCLC and Mariners Church, along with the workers from the home, circle the girls for prayer and a symbol of "guardian angel" protection after the banquet service had concluded.

We thank God for sending these wonderful teams to minister at the home. We are looking for other teams who can give a day or a week to this important ministry.

EXCITING NEWS: Vessels of Mercy has donated the funds to purchase five sewing machines for the Dorcas Sewing Room. "Access" Increasing at Women's Home

We are pleased to report that the access to spiritual and support services is increasing daily at the Nancy Cole Women's Home. A full time Psychologist (and two part-time Psychologists) are working with the girls in group and individual therapy and counseling sessions. A Psychiatrist visits the home each week and a doctor volunteers his time at least once each week. The girls now have exercise classes, ballet, art, French, literacy classes and daily Bible studies. In addition, visiting teams are providing excellent support services with specialized classes and Bible studies. PTL! Many of these resources are available because of your monthly operational support of the home.

Here are some examples from my recent visit:

Kristin (Baird) Gulbronson (in other words, my daughter!!!) has 21 enrolled in ballet classes and is conducting general exercise classes for all the residents:

The girls love the ballet instruction. We hope to provide proper equipment, clothing and shoes as well as additional teaching on incorporating dance into worship.

Michael has upgraded the computer access to include a web cam for Skype conversations. Contact him if you want to set up a video phone session with Pastor Lilliam.

They are working on several important projects at the home, including compiling a supply inventory, a list of suggested activities for interns and visiting mission's teams, a maintenance list for visiting teams, and establishing a literacy file for each resident. They would be glad to talk with you about your team coming to minister at the home.

Katiuska, the full time Psychologist, conducts group and individual therapy and counseling sessions (including Christian principles) with the residents. There are many positive reports of improved behavior and attitudes.

The response to the Sunday family sessions and services continues to be positive. Cesar interprets my sermon entitled "Surviving the Storm" (July 13, 2008). Our team is planning a great celebration with family and graduates of the Nancy Cole Women's Home on Sunday, August 10, 2008.

Thank you for your excellent response to the project needs at the Nancy Cole Women's Home. Eleven projects have been adopted in the last month and we have one new church monthly sponsor - Sanford Memorial Baptist Church in Brodnax, Virginia! PTL!

I just returned last night from Lima and my daughter, Kristin, and her husband (Michael Gulbronson) are now living in Lima working as interns at the women's home and in other ministries through Camino de Vida. With each visit, I am increasingly pleased with the developments in the program and in the resources that are available for the girls.

Here is an updated list of the projects that are still needed at the home (we hope to take the money for some of the pressing projects when our team visits the home on August 4-11):

God is working in Peru. Please check out the updates on this web page for the latest developments. Also, if you have not done so, you can sign up on this web page to receive automatic emails of any new updates. It is a convenient way to keep in touch with the girls at the women's home.

We are thrilled to announce two projects have been adopted: an individual at Mariners Church is providing the funds for the security wall on the fifth floor and Vessels of Mercy has committed to raising funds for the first phase of the sewing machine project. In collaboration with the SIFE Program at Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Virginia, we are talking with several major corporations concerning providing computers for the home and perhaps even Microsoft training. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the girls could leave the home certified in Word and other software programs! Talk about access.....

I am leaving for Peru in two weeks with Michael and Kristin, who will begin their six-month internship in Lima. I will be staying eight days on this trip. We have an apartment secured and are excited about God's provision and plans. Thanks to those of you who have given or pledged monthly support. They are over 80% toward their goal for the six months. PTL!

We have ten confirmed participants for the August ministry trip to Lima (seven days at the women's home) and Cusco (five days). Michael and Kristin will also be working with us. We will also be meeting with Pastor Willy Mont to discuss some future joint ministry endeavors in Cusco. Pray for God's guidance. A team from Mariners Church will also be ministering at the home during the same time frame. You should consider bringing a team to minister at the home.

Our biggest need is for monthly operational support for the home. If you can send a donation today, it would be an answer to prayer. You can Adopt a Bed for $50 per month (up from $45 because of the increase in prices). Three sponsorships for each bed will provide the needed monthly funding. So, we need 120 sponsors. We currently have app. $3,500 in monthly pledges, so fifty more monthly sponsors are needed at $50 each. The needs are increasing at the home (41 residents at the present time) and the price of food is soaring. Thank you for your faithful giving.

11. Library Books (Spanish and English – Some Good Fiction and Children’s Books Needed)
12. Establishment of Children’s Play Room with Proper Toys - $1,200
13. Foozball Machine for Rec Room - $200
14. Glass block covering for three open spaces in hall (to keep girls from entering dining hall and classroom at inappropriate times) - $300
15. Cameras on each floor with monitoring system - $750
16. Upgraded Copier for Teachers - $500
17. Ink Cartridges for Printer - $35 each (much more expensive in Peru)
18. Window Shades for Bedrooms and Classrooms - $300
19. Whole-Building Exhaust Fan for Ventilation - $800
20. Bonuses for Worker Appreciation Dinner in August - $500
